You can watch the opening of the Korean Queer Culture Festival streamed live online

As you’ll know if you follow Beyond Hallyu, the Korean Queer Culture Festival has been beset by a number of problems because of  issues with the police and authorities and interference from anti-LGBT Christian organisations.

Despite this, the festival is still going ahead although Pride may no longer be possible and it begins today. Because of the MERS outbreak, the organisers have decided to encourage people to attend online by streaming video of the opening ceremony. This is unfortunate for people planning to attend the festival in Seoul but it means anyone wishing to support the festival from outside of Korea can now attend virtually.

This year’s theme is ‘Self-Glowing Rainbow’ and the tagline is “Cover Seoul Plaza with Rainbow!”. The event consists of a number of stage performances followed by a DJ set. It will be streamed from 7.30pm KST and you can watch it live on YouTube.

Maybe we should all have a little global rainbow party in support of LGBT folks in Korea. Let us know where you are in the comments.

There seems to be a bit of a delay. Hopefully it will start soon. We’ll keep you updated.

Yep, kind of figured. They’re there to show how loving they perceive God to be…

      • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Well one sign I saw said it’s because of love not hate…

        • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

We love you so stop being yourselves, being happy and obey us or else? Wow, talk about an abusive relationship.

While we wait, here are some of the more outlandish protest signs.

The first one says: “Obama made the USA into a gay country, don’t encourage them to make Korea a gay country”

The third says “Mayor Park Won-soon! Don’t make other people’s precious children into gays”

    • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

MERS and gayness. Highly contagious. Don’t let a gay cough in your general direction. You have a high risk of becoming sinfully fabulous.

      • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Apparently the AIDS and the MERS will mix to make a super virus. Hopefully a sparkly one.

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Of course they start their stream with Gain. Because Gain is the best.

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Is the sound working for you guys?

    • Milan Pospech

      Nope

      • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Seems to have suddenly just kicked back in. Hopefully it will stay like that.

        • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

I refreshed to fix it. Also, I wish I could read Korean just to see all the trolls and haters lose their shit over the things in the video. XD

          • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Haha most I’ve seen have been positive but I’m sure there’s a few nutters

          • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

Yaay! Do tell us about the general sentiment. It’s important. :)

          • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

It’s moving a bit fast for my middling Korean but aside from a few Ilbe users, it seems to all be festival supporters.

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

    Here we go!

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Edhi just told the haters to shut up. They’re currently making fun of the protesters.

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

And the churches for not paying taxes.

      • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

I’m reading and enjoying that oh so much. XD

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Slogan is Queer Revolution – changing society with radical love.

This is Moon Gyeong-ran the Seoul commissioner for Human Rights.

She’s quoting Emma Watson: If not me, who? If not now, when?

    • Milan Pospech

Wasn’t Emma quoting someone too though?

      • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Probably haha it’s all getting a bit difficult to follow!

        • Milan Pospech

Maybe it’s just me…guess many people said similar in lot of variants.

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

She’s also talking about the need to acknowledge the rights of women and the rights of sexual minorities.

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

      “Let’s make a better world”

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Eddi is so feisty. I love her.

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

She just called the audience clever for understanding the ambassadors.

    • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

Who is she? I was looking for a profile, but nada. She’s so cool. 😀

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

French Ambassador: “Hate is a virus much worse than MERS.”

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

      They love the Irish Ambassador.

      • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

I noticed that. So much love for the lady.

        • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Here’s your lady! Short and sweet haha

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Israel: Today I feel like I’m back in Tel Aviv.

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

US Ambassador took the opportunity to quote famous gay director John Waters.

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

The folks with the rainbow were from Womenlink – a women’s rights organisation.

The signs said “The more we are connected, the stronger we are”

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Oh this is cool. These guys are from LGBT-affirming Christian churches.

    • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

She’s calling out the Christians who spread rumours about MERS and AIDS mixing to make a super virus.

    • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

The ones LGBT folks could use the help of the most. Since their not-so-christian members are the ones who hate them most.

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

You may here ‘Saranghara Jeohanghara’ a lot. It mean Love! Resist! and it’s the slogan of the Queer Revolution

    • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

I learned that type of speech thanks to protests in dramas. XD I am a hallyu-whore.

      • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

        Only you, Orion!

        • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

Can make this world seem right? I love you too. ♥

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

Went to make lunch. Sounds like the protestors have upped their anti since I was away.

  • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

And that’s the Queer Culture Festival officially open.

    • http://www.orionsramblings.net/ Orion

It was lovely. There was crotch thrusting too. I could hear “Christian” veins popping.

      • http://beyondhallyu.com/ Lizzie (beyondhallyu)

I had some issues with my feed for a while so I missed a few performances. Will have to go back and check them out later!
